Description

At one point I decided to make a sniper unit. Silent with single shot deadliness. Alright, I'll admit it. I got the idea after facing so many camping snipers in Counterstrike.

The vector image is showing the core unit set up for modelling in Maya 8.5. The far left is the original concept with the final design in the middle (front and side views). The far right design is the full unit; the core mobile suit encase in the transformable armor. I took the PMX-000 Messala from Zeta Gundam and transformed it into two distinct units. Full description as follows:

Custom Body Job and “Movable Frame within a Transformable Frame”-

This research is made possible by the blueprints provided by Will Barton of the UCIS and the blueprints of the F97 Crossbone Gundam X-3. Phase Shift provided by Giovanni Toranni, ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam.

The Messala is built on a transformable frame, meaning it has much more moving parts than a standard mobile suit and is more fragile. This custom body job’s purpose is to fix this problem while keeping the Messala’s transformable feature.

Rather than simply reinforcing every moving joint on the Messala, I realize that the Messala’s transformation revolves around its torso. The torso does not change save for the backpack engine that swings up above the Messala’s head (the ‘serpent head’ torso armor is actually the “head” of the mobile armor mode). The arms, legs, and engines just lock in place much like the Methuss, as opposed to the twisting and flipping of hands, limbs, legs, feet, and head like the Zeta and ZZ gundam.

Under this light, the Transformation Frame will be adapted as an external transformable ARMOR. The Messala will be broken up into two units: the Messala Core which is built on a Movable frame and houses the powerplant; and the Transformable armor that the Messal Core is plugged into, which transforms in the same way the old Messala did. The arms of the Messala are tucked into the sides of the torso when wearing the transformable armor while the legs fit into the leg sockets. If the transformable armor is heavily damaged, it can be ejected.

The Messala Core unit is a general purpose melee fighting unit. Its armaments only includes Chest Megamachine cannons and beam saber emitters on the wrists, feet (toe area), elbow joints, and knee joints. Only the mounted beam sabers are usable in the complete transformable frame. The Messala Core joints are also built with degrees of movement. This is due to the lack of armor plates that overlap joint areas and magnetically coated joints which also adds extra agility. The Messala Core unit’s flexibility can be compared to that of a contortionist.

The Messala Transformable armor still has the weapons of the old Messala.

Depleted Uranium Shell Ammunition –

This project’s goal is to create a projectile ammunition that can be fired by conventional guns and penetrate high caliber armor such as Phase Shift Armor and Gundanium armor. As a side effect, this new type of ammunition should deal serious damage or even pierce beam shielding. The desired result is to create a vastly cheap but effective alternative to beam weapons.

Depleted Uranium is actually U-238, a large potion of the uranium ore that we mine for (99.3 percent) in search of the U-235 isotope (0.7 percent) that nuclear fission reactors use. U-238 is a dense metal with an extremely high tensile strength and is fortunately minimally radioactive. It has a half life of close to 4.5 billion years, and so long as U-238 remains outside of the body, it is relatively harmless.

Tensile strength is the degree of tension or stress that a metal can endure before breaking. U-238 has a tension limit greater than other metals found in conventional weaponry.

Within a century of nuclear fission, the Earth has set aside enough depleted uranium to warrant urgent mass storages of U-238. This makes it relatively cheap to gather and use as armor penetrators. In this era, we had over three centuries of nuclear fission. In fact, some of the now existing mobile weapons still use nuclear fission.

Vastly superior to normal explosive munitions, the goal of the project’s modified depleted uranium is to penetrate phase shift armor. However, due to varying Phase Shift strengths and their dependent power sources, the effectiveness of Depleted Uranium Shells varies.

There are two different types of shells being developed by this project: Conventional and the 240mm Anti-Heavy Armor Sniper Round (AHASR). The Conventional round has a standard shell on top of a propellant case configuration. Instead of a sharp steel point, the Conventional shell has a hollow Depleted Uranium Shell tip filled with tungsten. The shell is fired like standard munitions but after the shell armor penetrates (or the shell impacts the armor), the hollow DUS tip will shatter. The friction and speed of the shattering DUS will ignite the contained tungsten creating an immolation effect. In addition to thousands of high speed Depleted Uranium fragments puncturing the innards (or armor) of the mobile suit, the tungsten will begin to burn away parts of the mobile suit. Tungsten also has a high tensile strength allowing it to pierce the less protective metals inside the mobile suit.

For the Messala Core unit, there are several new hand armaments that will use the Conventional round. There is the 120mm P90 submachinegun, a Pump-action shotgun that fires shells filled with left over DU and Tungsten, and the small but deadly twin 90mm semi-automatic handguns.

The AHASR is a round specially reserved to combat special mobile suits or key installation structures. These targets are dangerous and will most likely endure a standard DUS Conventional attack or be difficult to approach. The best example is Gundam, the legendary war machines that have proven their power in previous wars.

Unlike the Conventional DUS round, the AHASR requires its own launching system. For this purpose came the development of the Anti-Armor Magnum Sniper Rifle (AAMSR). The AAMSR is actually a refitted Linear Cannon provided by the UCIS. The Linear Cannon uses magnetic fields to accelerate a metal projectile at extremely high speeds. As a result of the round not touching the barrel itself, the Linear Cannon can fire without showing a massive heat signature. To improve on the magnetic fields used for acceleration, the Linear Cannon is fitted with a dedicated 2350 kW Minovsky Ultracompact nuclear fusion reactor. This allows the Linear Cannon to maximize the speed and intensity of the magnetic fields used to fire rounds.

The AHASR round can be described as an extreme version of the Conventional Round. The 240mm shell is completely made out of Depleted Uranium and is hollow. Since the round is being fired by a Linear Cannon, there is no need for a propellant system. Instead, the extra space is used to store tungsten, a PHASE SHIFT ARMOR system powered by a battery commonly found in beam sabers, and a 120mm version of the Conventional Round with an explosive propellant.

Penetrators and armor defeat each other simply by whoever has the higher tensile strength upon impact. Phase Shift works by exciting the molecules in Titanium armor to produce a higher tensile strength. Although Depleted Uranium itself has a respectably high tensile strength, in order to be sure the round will penetrate higher end armor we need to raise the DUS’s tensile strength even more. Titanium and Uranium share the same amount of valence electrons and their electron orbits resemble one another, allowing Phase Shift to be applicable to Depleted Uranium.

The AHASR is a very dangerous armor penetrator. Reinforced by itss own Phase Shift system, the Depleted Uranium round has a guaranteed chance of destroying Phase Shift armor, and an 80% chance of piercing Gundanium armor. The round operates as a two-stage weapon. The outer Depleted Uranium/Phase Shift Shell has a greater possibility of shattering or deflecting off the target. To increase the chances of penetration upon impact, the inner AHASR shell will be shot forward by an explosive propellant. Coupled with the initial velocity of the shell, this inner round is fired at nearly double the rate. Once inside, the shell will self destruct (most likely due to the collision force or by the contained explosive), fragmenting the Depleted Uranium casing and spilling tungsten everywhere. Tungsten ignites itself to super temperatures due to friction and the heat of the explosion. The combined effect of super heated tungsten caused by piercing the armor and high speed Depleted Uranium fragments inside the mobile suit will either destroy the target or mortally wound it.

The “Bunker Buster Mode” of this shell is just a change in the duration of the Phase Shift system, allowing the AHASR round to penetrate further into installations before exploding.

Due to the size and weight of the AAMSR it is built as a bolt-action weapon. The Messala will have to manually reload after each shot and each magazine only holds ten (10) rounds. Due to the recoil of firing such a weapon, apogee motors and thrusters are built into the rifle. They are powered by the AAMSR’s dedicated fusion reactor.

Aiming the AAMSR requires a combination of the Messala’s sensors and a laser targeting system. The interference from Minovsky Particles and N-Jammers makes a laser targeting system the best option. The data from the targeting system is relayed to a Sniper HUD helmet that fits over the Messala’s head. The helmet is ejectable and only locks in position whenever the Messala enters sniper mode. Control of that system goes to a special cockpit attachment that is integrated into Shizuru's left prosthetic arm. The targeting system is donated from the special weapons system scanner from the F97 Crossbone Gundams.

End result:

Conventional DUS Ammunition:
-All machine guns, Vulcan guns, and CIWS are replaced with Depleted Uranium Shells that can damage Phase Shift Armor and Gundanium armor. Adds 5 tons to the Messala.
-Several optional hand armaments variants: P90 120mm Submachinegun, Pump-action shotgun, and 90mm automatic handgun (x2). Adds 4 tons.

AAMSR and AHASR equipment:
-Long range sniper system that will go through or heavily damage everything up to Phase Shift Armor and Gundanium Armor. Results vary with Beam Shielding.
-Outer limit range 100 kilometers (space), 50 kilometers (under Earth-like Gravity).
-Total of ten (10) AHASR rounds per magazine, with a total of 6 magazines.
-Considered as optional hands armament. Adds 10 tons.

EXCALIBUR Guidance System for Shells: Equipment to improve the accuracy and efficiency of eliminating targets. This involves the installation of a navigation and guidance systems, and a vector thrust system. The shell’s navigation system is an extension of the targeting sensor system acquired from the Crossbone X-3 Gundam. This allows for the shell to update and adjust its position in relation to the target via laser communication with the targeting sensor system on the Messala Redone. However, this maneuvering is extremely limited. At maximum range, the shell can only manage a 15 degree deviation off its original trajectory. Course adjustments are done from firing the vector thrusters along the body of the cartridge section behind the U-238/Phase Shift penetrator. This lowers the payload of the cartridge section considerably.

Anti-Heavy Armor Sniper Round (AHARR) Block Variants: These are cartridge payload choices for various mission roles.

Block I (Höllenfeuer): This is the standard shell but with a slight modification to the original Tungsten payload. Instead, there is a canister of napalm replaces the tungsten cartridge. The napalm gel is saturated with filaments of tungsten and magnesium. Specially dispersed oxygen capsules are also added to the napalm gel allowing brief ignition in space. This is designed so that after breaching the armor, the napalm will use up all the oxygen in the local area while the tungsten begins its immolation effect. Magnesium also reacts with water in the air to produce hydrogen gas that explodes.
Chemical formula: Mg(s) + 2H2O(g) Mg(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)

Block II: The cartridge section is replaced with a Micro-missile pod. This allows the shells to release a small mass of micro-missiles outwards before the shell’s penetrator strikes the target. (Number of micro-missiles are to be determined by the staff upon approval of this tech)
Block III: The cartridge section is replaced with a storage pod of Cluster Munitions. This allows the shell to sprinkle the ordinance along a section of its trajectory path.
Block IV: The cartridge section is replaced with a rack of four smaller solid fuel missiles. This Split Missile variant allows four missiles to be launched out along the shell’s trajectory towards the target.

History: There has been an expressed need to provide the mobile weapon garrisons of CROW with fire support in the absence of capital warships and traditional fleet units. There already is a MS-use support platform known as the Mega Rider, but its roles are limited. The Support Platform provides a range of versatile roles much like the helicopter did for land armies.

The modular system allows the commander in each battle to assign certain specific tasks to each support platform. Each craft can only support one module and must return to a ship or base to swap out modules/rearm. Modules of course can be emergency jettison if necessary.

The piloting mobile weapon mounts the support vehicle like a motorcycle, situated behind the modular docking system. An enhanced weapon targeting sensor derived from the Messala Redone Complete’s targeting system is installed so that the piloting mobile weapon can have increased accuracy. The modular system is just an upgraded series of hardpoints. The installed Minovsky Craft system allows atmospheric use for aerial positions and travel. The stealth Mirage Colloid system also allows the advantage of favorable positions in battle. The Mobile Doll System is a feature that allows the remote control function much like the Mobile Dolls produced by CROW. This allows the Support Platform to be used in absence of a piloting Mobile Weapon.

In terms of performance, the Support Platform is vulnerable to direct fire. Although able to withstand basic anti-aircraft fire and some missile hits, the only means of defense offered are the countermeasures and Mirage Colloid system. The purpose of the support platform is after all to provide fire support from long range or land/reinforce units onto a secured beachhead. The craft has great forward velocity but suffers from actual agility.

"Castration" is the anticipated commissioning name for the first support vehicle of this class, to be used with the PMX-000C + TA Messala Redone Complete.

Anti Beam Enhancements: this weapons improvement is to take advantage of newly discovered results between Anti Beam Coating and various armors (beam shields, lightwave shields, positron reflector/defector shields, trans-phase armor and variable phase shift armor). This treatment does not apply to the 240mm Anti-Heavy Armor Sniper Round (AHASR) since it already has Phase Shift applied.

Anti Beam Katars: This replaces the 4 x beam saber, rated at 0.35 MW, mounted on wrists and feet with beam katars. Each hardpoint has two anti-beam coated blades that extend, but between them is a beam saber that can be activated that extends past the blades. The plan is to use the solid anti-beam coated blades to break past beam protection before activating the beam saber for traditional damage.

Anti Beam Saturated U-238 Munitions- this improvement on solid round ammunition is to take advantage of newly discovered results between Anti Beam Coating and various armors (beam shields, lightwave shields, positron reflector/defector shields, trans phase armor and variable phase shift armor). This treatment does not apply to the 240mm Anti-Heavy Armor Sniper Round (AHASR) since it already has Phase Shift applied.

100 mm Shotgun rounds: U-238 fragments are stored in a vat of Anti Beam fluid that serves as the shotgun round itself.

Standard U-238 munitions rounds: Each Depleted Uranium shell is dipped and coated in Anti Beam fluid before loaded into magazines.
